The Bus
Outstanding in the Field founder Jim Denevan is finally ready to admit it: it's time for a new tour bus. The old 1953 Flxible is too old and too unreliable to be dragged across the country once again. We will still pull her out of the garage for an occasional special appearance in California, but we need something else for the long haul. Does anyone know of a mint condition Flxible that's both affordable and dependable? Please let us know. But how about a 1967 GMC? We've been looking around and the best candidate so far is Dolly Parton's old tour bus... Don't be surprised if we roll up in a different bus this season.

Outstanding Founder, Outstanding Art
Before throwing all of his energy into the 2009 tour, Outstanding in the Field founder Jim Denevan is putting the finishing touches on a giant artwork on a dry lake in the Nevada desert. For all of Jim's fans who have been interested in checking out the art, Jim is extending an invitation to join him on what is likely the world's largest artwork. He is in northwestern Nevada - the GPS coordinates of his location are N40 48.076 W119 08.124. Jim will be living on the drawing in the Outstanding bus with 2008 farm dinner tour bus drivers Caleb and Ben from now through next Monday, May 11. Come by for a cold beer and desert stories.

Grow a Farmer
May is Grow a Farmer month. For the past 30 years 1,200 organic farmers in the United States got their start at the University of Santa Cruz California (UCSC) Farm and Garden apprenticeship program. More than a few of those farmers have hosted and participated in Outstanding in the Field events. Grow a Farmer is a campaign to raise funds to build on-site housing for the student farmer apprentices. Farm apprentices have been living in teepees and temporary tents on the farm since the 1970s. Many restaurants, companies and organizations are contributing to Grow a Farmer. Outstanding in the Field's sold out dinner at Everett Family Farm on May 31 will benefit the Grow a Farmer campaign. Leon Vehaba, farm manager at Everett Family Farm is a graduate of the UCSC program. To learn more about Grow a Farmer efforts visit the campaign website.
