It is installation art and it is performance art, a limited engagement. It is a temporary connection amongst individuals and the soil of the Earth. It is highbrow and lowbrow, haiku and ho-down."

Frequently Asked Questions...

Due to our high volume of inquiries and our small number of staff, we thought we'd make things easier for everyone by providing a few answers regarding private events.

Outstanding in the Field special events

Our private events vary in structure and detail while still maintaining our Outstanding integrity to explore place and to source locally. While facilitating a gathering that accurately reflects our philosophy of celebrating community through food, we make sure to weave your traditions into the story.

Scope of possibilities

From roasting a pig for three hundred people in San Francisco's Dolores Park for the Slow Food Nation Eat-In, to celebrating GQ's 50th anniversary in an urban garden setting in Manhattan for one hundred, to a luncheon for twenty in David Kinch's (of Manresa) biodynamic garden, we gather the necessary elements of the surrounding environment to create a unique journey on your plate - no matter the size nor nature of the celebration.

A taste of Outstanding in the Field

Arriving guests typically gather together with an hors d'œuvre and bubbles in hand to explore the farm. After a bit of adventure, we all sit down at one long table to enjoy a five course family style meal and to learn the story of our food.

When, where, and how

Since 1999 we've developed direct relationships with over ninety unique farms and created over one hundred celebrations at the source. Among our vast repertoire of places, people and products, we know where to go, who to source from, and how to set our signature table. We can take on as little or as much of the event planning as you would like. The most important aspect of the event is to maintain its integrity with respect to its place, to your community, and to what we do.

And weddings?

Yes, weddings. Magical feasts under the stars, in oak groves, on top of mountains. Wherever your nuptial vows may take you, we can create our signature table of any size, in any location, around the world.

Budget

We strive to create farm dinners at a cost that is equitable to our clients, our farmers, our chefs, and our staff. Part of our core philosophy is expressed in our fair compensation of those who grow and create what we eat. That being said, we are able to adjust as necessary should you know someone with a dinner location where we can set up shop, a sponsor of your event who would be happy to donate wine; perhaps a great aunt or uncle who owns a cattle ranch. Of course, these are simply suggestions.

Your next step...

For your own farm dinner celebration, contact Katy Oursler, Director of Private Events, at privateevents@outstandinginthefield.com. The more information you give us, the better equipped we are to provide a quote for your event. Possible details to include are your timeframe, a proposed location (general area is fine), the number of guests, and the nature of the gathering you would like to create.
