Gardeners are farmers too - very small farmers. We first visited La Plaza Cultural Community Garden in 2005, where we found a fertile urban environment nurturing numerous growers, producers, and food artisans. A rich culture of food
production exists in the heart of New York City.
We wanted to bring the big city's small farmers the same Outstanding
attention. In 2005 Outstanding in the Field founder Jim Denevan was the chef at the first
NYC dinner. In 2006 Gabrielle Hamilton of Prune
Restaurant was our guest chef. Each year, we collect food from all five boroughs and bring several
gardeners, winemakers, and food artisans to the table. This is one of our favorite events.
Outstanding in the Field events feature a leisurely tour of the
hosting farm followed by a five course, farm-style dinner at our long table set in a scenic spot. Dinner is accompanied by a wine paired with each course. Diners are joined at the table by the farmer, food producers, a winemaker and other local artisans associated with the meal.
